Rocky Memphis - Freeware

Rocky Memphis is a retro side scroller in the vein of the Commodore 64 days. “Commodore 64 sidescrollers must be brown.” Says one poster about Rocky Memphis. The object is simple. Enter the temple, collect all 4000 items, get out of the temple. Yes. 4000 items. That is spread across a map spanning 600 rooms. To be fair though, a lot of the rooms are not that  difficult to maneuver and you are given a map which you can access by pressing F1. The difficulty comes into play in terms of navigation. The game is absolutely gargantuan. Also, the passeges are very cleverly twisted and interlocked to make, what feels like a tomb. (on the Commodore 64 anyway.)

As for the actual gameplay, it’s surprisingly chilled out to play. The creator of the game has stated that he doesn’t care much for ultra difficult platforming that can be found in games like Mega Man and Ghosts & Goblins. In Rocky Memphis, the object is to complete the game with the best time, so rather than loose lives and get “Game Over”, you simply have 10 seconds or so added to your play clock and you continue on your way. That’s not to say the game is easy though. There have been several maps which have gotten me to use words that aren’t allowed on the radio. Also, it should be noted that the game has a very functional save feature which supports 5 saved games. This makes the temple possible to conquer in short sessions. Finally, the game features a leaderboard. You casual gamers will enjoy the chilled out gameplay mechanics, and hardcore completionists can go nuts competing for the best time.

Rocky Memphis: Temple of Offuxoff is available for free for PC or Mac. The PC version weighs in at 6.4 megs. (Which his shocking considering how MASSIVE this game is.) This is one of the good ones guys. Before I knew it was going to be free, I was ready to shell out cash for this one. If it cost 5 bucks, it would still be worth it. If you like old school, you really need to get moving and download this.

  1. Hi 'Critical', nice review!

By the way, have you played the demo, or bought the full version, of Armalyte... also by the Ovine boys?

    It's *great*.
