Ask CF

So I want to run a video series where I sit and talk based on questions asked by the viewer. I have seen this done on youtube before. It seems like a good way to keep an open dialog between viewers and fellow video makers alike while giving me a way to generate some interesting content in a short amount of time. The problom with this formula is question for the first episode. So..

ASK CF!!

Any question you can think of, leave it as a comment here and I'll try to answer as many as I can when I get the video up. This doesn't have to be a Q&A about myself in perticular, just anything you feel like hearing discussed on the air. Thanks for reading. See you in the video.

Strategy Guides and Game Books

EA buys PopCap. Immediately Closes Offices

PopCap was recently purchased by Electronic Arts. Popcap is now facing massive downsizing. Offices are being closed, and people are being laid off. So what has EA done with the Popcap name? They have released 4 singleplayer board games on Steam. Popcaps purchase was not new news per se, but now it seems EA wants to use the name once associated with a creative and prolific software company to peddle shuffleware. I felt it was important to remind everyone that Popcap is no longer the company which brought us games like Plants vs Zombies and Bejeweled, but rather another arm of the tight fisted corporate greed which chokes the life and creativity out of our industry. The saddest part is that this is no surprise.

What else should we expect from the worst company in the United States of America?

Goodbye Popcap.

Goodnight and goodluck.

Samurai Jazz review (BlazeEpic)

So I finally bought a game from Desura that didn't come from a bundle or from IndieGameStand.com. I must say, samurai_jazz is a neat game for three bucks, but it's unfortunetly getting overshadowed for me since I bought it the same morning as Wizardry 6 & 7 off of GOG.com. I have been waiting a couple weeks to play those games.

So what do I think of samurai_jazz so far?

Bundle In A Box - Capsule Computers Indie Bundle

So Bundle-in-a-box has packaged the following games for pay-what-you-want-starting-at-a-buck. Super Tower Rush, Hacker Evolution Untold, Pixelry, and The Blackwell Series.

If you don’t already have the Blackwell Series, they are the finest point and click games I have played in recent years. These alone make this bundle worth it.

Also included is Super Tower Rush (pictured), which is a split screen platformer currently being sold on Desura. This is a really great game which I was lucky enough to pick up from IndieGameStand.com a while back on the cheap.

Go check out Bundle-in-a-box and grab one while you still can.

Android Review: Combo Crew (The Game Bakers)

Brawlers are a good time. Even bad brawlers are a little fun. The worst brawler I can think of is Pit Fighter for the SNES and even that was somewhat entertaining. Combo Crew is a brawler for iOS and Android that I was lucky enough to try recently. The big draw here is that there is no on-screen controller involved. Fighting is accomplished by swiping over the enemies, and the character will run over and execute an attack. Two finger swipes execute a combo and a swipe+holding the end motion executes a charged attack.

Let Me Gush About Wizardry For a Moment

Man what a morning! GOG.com has been one of my regular stops on the webbernet for a while.  This morning while I was popping in to see if there were any flash sales, I saw that they added Wizardry 6, 7, and 8 to their catalog. I have been really hoping for a while for Wizardry to be available again somewhere so I’m pretty psyched to play those again. So having seen that, I’m going to gush about
Wizardry a bit.

So the first package they have on sale contains Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, and Wizardry 7: Crusaders of the Dark Savant. I never got to play Bane of the Cosmic Forge, but I did find it complete in box at the used book store about 15 years ago for two bucks. The disks didn’t work but I held onto the box for a long time simply because

Saw this while on vacation. They could never duplicate the impact of the older Wolf games, but it still looks like it could be a fun game.

Kolteka Sprite Testing

That's right ladies and gentleman. Kolteka Episode 1 on RPG Maker VX Ace. I did some testing a while back and even went as far as to redraw some of the maps from the old RPG Maker 2k version of Kolteka, (That is, my Rm2k reboot,) but unfortunetly, when my son found out you could draw castles, he scribbled all over the maps with random tiles and destroyed all my work.

*Sigh*

Anyway, late tonight some guys were playing my last RPG Maker game, and joking around. It got me to work on this a bit. Here is a look at how the pack in sprites fit with the characters.

Why Steam Greenlight is a Bad Thing

Steam Greenlight is a program where indie developers can pay $100 for the privilege of being considered good enough to be sold in the Steam catalog. Upon paying the fee, developers can post their games in the Greenlight catalog for users to vote whether or not their game is worth buying. Each vote is tallied in some sort of back end manor which is hidden from the public and the results of which are totally unknown until Steam releases its list of seemingly arbitrarily selected games.

Indie Review: Deadly 30 (Headup Games)

Wow. I really like this game. Deadly 30 is a tower defense game for the most part. For 30 days and 30 nights, the player travels around looking for materials during the day and defending their base camp at night. Scrap metal can be found to build better gear and defenses. The art work is okay. It looks a little campy at times but it does the job. The voice acting sounds like it was done in-house. At first glance, it’s a pretty run of the mill indie tower defense production with zombies.

So what’s so good about this game? Honest to goodness difficulty. The press materials commonly show a party of three members, but the other two characters are met seemingly at random. One time I went to day six without meeting anyone, another time I had a full party by day 5. One brilliant part of the game design is that the set up makes the player feel danger when outside base camp at night but the reality is that the only way to be successful at the game is to leave the safety of the base and explore for materials deep into the dangerous zombie infested night. If you want to live, you’re going to have to brave it out there. At least a little.

Indie Review: Adventure Apes and the Mayan Mystery (ScaryPotato)

I hate it when people misuse the term “Metroidvania”. That term was coined to express a cross between the explorative non-liner platforming action of Metroid and the whip action of Castlevania. However these days “Metroidvania” tends to applied to any sidescroller where you do anything besides strict travel to the right hand side of the screen.

Adventure Apes and the Mayan Mystery is NOT a Metroidvania game. More accurately, it’s a Metroid style game with Monkeys. As far as gameplay is concerned, this is a side scrolling exploration game. Jump, shoot, find the next component to increase your abilities and thus open more areas. (I.E. jump higher etc etc)

Ace of Spades Sucks

I would like to voice my dissatisfaction with this game.
I have a few complaints about this game that several of my fellow Steam users have also taken issue with. I feel they should be logged somewhere so here is the deal.

1) Poor Optimization.
I know that the system requirements are listed in detail on the store page. However this is an ugly game. There are absolutely no textures. There is no reason why it should not run on my i5 laptop. At 10 bucks, This is a budget game. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED. If that means overhauling the engine, than that’s what they have to do.

2) No level building.
The concept of spending 3 hours building a map to have a 3 minute shootout is what attracted me to

This video has been in the pipeline for a couple years now. I havent made a video in awhlie so it feels really rough but I'm proud of it. This is the single longest scripted video I have made since 2008 when I started. I worked my butt off to get this done so I really hope you guys enjoy it!

Tiger Claw Radio #116 - Kirby's Demon Project

Awful Falafal and Cap had a discussion with me about a bunch of things including the Sega Saturn and Emulaton. This episode is somewhat short because I opted to use the time to work on my upcoming Final Fantasy 9 video which is due out on the 8th of this month. Thanks so much to The Corner Pub for letting me use thier mumble escapades in my podcast!

New RPG Maker Game (Freeware)

In order to get used to RPG Maker VX Ace I made a joke game entitled "Collect the Dicks". I assure you that this is a real game which is fully playable. Collect the Dicks is a 10 minute adventure game which was originally posted in beta form on the TC-Pub forums and later denied submission to the RPG Maker hub website RPGMaker.net, and I'm not making this up, because of: "No Thanks". (No really, thats what they said.)

So anyway, as I'm taking steps into reviving my older, more well recived RPG maker project "Kolteka", (which was originally written by Enjibearatsu), here is a funnly little joke game I made along the way. Enjoy "Collect the Dicks".

Download link after the jump.

She Comes (Freeware)

She Comes is a completed RPG Maker VX Ace project I found on RPGMaker.net. It plays more like a horror adventure game rather than an RPG. RPG Makers tradisional combat is replaced with puzzles and a brief monster chase sequence. The atmosphere is really well done and legitimatly spooky at times. Total playtime runs about 20 to 30 minutes with two endings. Highly reccomended.

RPG Maker VX Ace is not required to play this game.

Download She Comes at it's RPGMaker.net listing here.
