Free Album Review: New Retro Wave - Maximum Burn

This compilation of synthwave 80's nostalgia tunes,  themed around 80's work out tapes, has been a fixture in my car for the last couple of weeks and was featured in the last episode of Tiger Claw Radio.

Spotlight tracks include the lead off track, Lifeline from Forêt de Vin. I typically don't like it when vocals show up on synthwave tracks, but somehow, this one does it right. Also check out Adrenaline from Dream Fiend. This one was a familiar track having been included in the game 'Super Indie Carts'.

This is a solid album and checks all the boxes of a must download.

Chiptunes = WIN 7

Volume 7 of the highly anticipated super compilation of chiptunes from the net-label 'Chiptunes = WIN' is out. This came out during my month. This is 52 tracks of premo chip music from around the scene. I'm' a little late to the party on this one, but it's the best single download release out these right now.

Winter Chip XIII from Battle of the Bits is Now Free

Winter Chip XIII is now free. So if you didn't want to pay the initial 1$ price tag, you can go pick this up for free from Battle of the Bit's bandcamp page.

This is a huge compilation of 50 entries from the huge Winter Chip competition this past December.

Chiptune Compilation Album: Chips = FLIPPED

This compilation from Chiptunes=WIN came out back in March and I somehow missed it. I think during that time, my attention was going into really getting to know BattleoftheBits.org for the first time, but now that I have found it, man what an album.

New Chiptune Compilation from DESKPOP - DESKPOP VR

After being introduced to DESKPOP from their collaboration with CHIPTUNES = WIN, there is a brand new compilation out with 11 tracks which dropped today for your enjoyment.

The text on the bandcamp site explains that the goal is to put music to a conceived visual which in this case, is based on VR. The end result is a chip album which, sounds a bit more dance/hip hop related than I'm used to listening to, but it had some great tracks. 

Some stand outs are Drain Puppet's "BRIDGE TO SPACE" which clocks in at a hearty 7:05, and Ricco Harver's - MACAW JAMZ (featuring r u s s e l b u c k) which is much shorter, but is easily the peppyest track in the group.

Chiptune Spotlight: DESKPOP & ChipWin

This name-your-price chiptune compilation has been the spotlight of music on Tiger Claw Radio for the last couple of weeks. 

The styles range pretty widely across the 16 tracks, but the common thread is that they are upbeat and pretty positive sounding.

Some of the stand out tracks are the submissions from FLOOR BABA, for creating something about as chill as it gets, Game Genie Sokolov for his use of the Genesis chip in a convincing and slick beat, and TheOfficialLobst for an uplifting track that I can only describe as top notch driving music.

The Pink Guy Album Review (Free Music Discussion)

The Pink Guy album is the musical brain child of Japanese-Australian YouTuber/Rapper most people know as Filthy Frank. Frank, who has been identified by one YouTuber as “George Miller”, relies on a large cast of characters, all portrayed by Frank/George. Normally several characters played by the same person on YouTube will come across as somewhat sad or lame. (Most people rely on this when there simply isn’t anyone else willing to appear on the internet with them.) Frank however, pulls it off with great madness and sometimes brilliance.

This album is a 38 song anthology of every musical gag that has appeared on the Filthy Frank show up until its release. The lyrics are clever and the hooks are mostly pretty catchy although I wouldn’t want to be caught in public humming “peanut butter on my balls, let the dog lick it.” The styles also vary between ukulele driven pop singing and hip hop.

What's a master piano player and some NES classic tracks make mixed together? Solid gold tracks.  This album is pay what you want over on bandcamp. This is one of the rare ones fellas. Go snag one. Leave a buck or two in the hat if you can muster it. Enjoy!

One Second Song Chipnoise Compilation

I came across this little gem over on the 8bc.org forums. Apparently, somewhere along the line, there was a compilation which consisted of chiptune music songs of one second. There were about 200+ entries, and there are all mashed up on one track which is hosted over on archive.org. I just happened across this randomly, but apparently, this was a long time coming. Go check out the mp3 for kicks.

Seal of Quality – Fate Patterns - Chiptune Album Review

Chiptune artist ‘Seal of Quality’ recently released a new album entitled Fate Patterns. Fate Patterns is a free release which consists of 10 songs weighing in at 23:46 long. This is a pretty dancy album with some hip hop beats mixed in with melodies which manage to be dancy without getting to dark or two run-of-the-mill. Also, some use of digitized vocals and some non-chip instruments thrown in like the synth in the final track “Thor” give the album some flesh to set it apart from pure famitracker zips. There was also some pretty nice chip-arpeggio work in the album. A good example would be “The Purest Feeling” (The eighth track.)
